Variable Rates & Expos on FRSky Taranis (OpenTX)

I used to assign a three position switch that would control my rates and expos.  Recently, I discovered a way to create variable expos and rates.  Below is a guide to show you how to assign your expos to S1 and your rates to S2.  When expos or rates are changed, your Taranis will announce the changed value.

If you haven’t already done so, downloaded and install OpenTX Companion.  For instruction on how this is done, visit OpenTX University.

Expos

1.  Create a linear two point curve (Curve 1) to control expos.  On the left side of the curve, enter the minimum value and on the right enter the maximum value you will need.

2.  On the Inputs tab, find an unused channel (Input 9) and assign a dial or slider (S1) to control your rates.  Assign as follows…Input Name: S1, Weight: 100%, Source: S1, Curve: Curve 1

3.  On the Servo tab, Name Channel 9 ‘Expo’.

4.  On the Mixes tab, assign Source [I9]S1 in CH9.  Keep all other settings at their default values.

5.  On the Special Functions tab, find an unused function and assign it as follows…Switch: ONAction: Adjust GV3, Parameter: Source: S1, and check the ON checkbox to enable this function.

6.  Finally, go back to the Inputs tab and open your aileron channel.  Assign as follows…Curve: Expo, check the GV box, and finally select GV3 for the Source.

7.  Repeat step 6 for Elevator and Rudder if needed.

 

Rates

1.  Create a linear two point curve (Curve 2) to control rates.  On the left side of the curve, enter the minimum value and on the right enter the maximum value you will need.

2.   On the Inputs tab, find an unused channel (Input 10) and assign a dial or slider (S2) to control your rates.  Assign as follows…Input Name: S2, Weight: 100%, Source: S2, Curve: Curve 2

3.  On the Servo tab, Name Channel 10 ‘Rates’.

4.  On the Mixes tab, assign Source [I10]S2 in CH10.  Keep all other settings at their default values.

5.  Finally, on the Mixes tab, add a new mix to the bottom of your aileron channel.  Assign as follows…Name: Rates, Source: [I10]S1, Multiplex: Multiply, Slow Up and Slow Down: 4.

NOTE: In the screen shot above,  switch L16 is not part of the rates programming.  I am using this switch to configure my Pixhawk.
